A 27-pound tomcat faces a long road to recovery after his rescue from a neglectful home in San Antonio. Melvin, whose weight is the equivalent to a 5’9″ man weighing 449 lbs., is up for adoption, along with 20 lb. Marvin, who also was rescued from a home where they were confined with little room to roam and exercise.
City cat Animal Control Services chief veterinarian Dr. Marilyn Gotbeter says the animals gained from obese lack of exercise until becoming too fat to exercise cats.
Melvin and Marvin worked out with doctors but quickly grew exhausted despite barely moving.
In the doctor’s words, “They basically pass out.”
Dr. Piter say the cats are shy but sweet, and recovery is possible with a caring owner.
